Hearing loss

Reduced hearing in one or both ears, gradual or sudden.

Hearing loss can come on gradually with age or noise exposure, or suddenly. It may be due to wax or fluid, problems with the eardrum or middle ear, or the hearing nerve. Sudden hearing loss in one ear should be assessed urgently.

Common symptoms

  • Difficulty following conversation, especially in background noise
  • Turning the volume up higher than others need
  • Muffled hearing or a blocked feeling
  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

Assessment and treatment

Assessment includes examination and a hearing test. Treatment depends on the cause, from removing wax or treating infection to hearing aids or referral for further tests. Sudden hearing loss is treated promptly.
