Non-allergic rhinitis

Nasal symptoms like allergy but without an allergic cause, often triggered by temperature or food additives.

Sometimes the nose is over-reactive to non-allergic triggers such as a change in temperature or food additives like sulphites (for example in white wine), causing symptoms similar to allergy. These are grouped under the term non-allergic rhinitis.

The nose can also be under-reactive, which can lead to recurrent infections and sinusitis. Accurate diagnosis is important, because other nasal diseases can mimic allergy and the right treatment is often different.

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to the trigger and may include avoidance, nasal sprays and rinses, and treating any underlying condition.
