Snoring
Noisy breathing during sleep, with or without sleep apnoea.
Snoring is the sound made when air passes tissues that vibrate during sleep. It is very common. The important first step is to work out whether it is simple snoring or a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, where breathing repeatedly stops.
Things that make it worse
- A blocked nose
- Alcohol in the evening and sedatives
- Weight gain
- Sleeping on your back
Assessment and treatment
Assessment includes examining the nose and throat and, where apnoea is suspected, a sleep study. Treatment is tailored, from treating nasal obstruction and lifestyle measures to devices or surgery. A blocked nose is often part of the picture, which suits a rhinology-led approach.
