Tinnitus is the perception of a sound, often ringing, buzzing or hissing, without an outside source. It is common and usually not dangerous, but it can be intrusive and is frequently linked to hearing loss.
When to seek assessment
- Tinnitus in one ear only
- Tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat
- Tinnitus with hearing loss, dizziness or ear discharge
- Tinnitus that is distressing or affecting your sleep
Assessment and treatment
Assessment includes examination and a hearing test to look for an underlying cause. Treatment focuses on managing any cause, supporting hearing, and techniques and sound therapy to reduce the impact of the tinnitus.
