Olfaction and rhinosinusitis

The science of smell, and the inflammatory disease of the nose and sinuses, with a particular focus on biologic therapy.

Mr Gane's research background is the science of smell. His MPhil at UCL was on the vibrational theory of olfaction, and he is an Honorary Lecturer at the UCL Ear Institute. He has authored more than eighty peer-reviewed articles on olfaction, chronic rhinosinusitis, COVID-19-associated anosmia and parosmia, biologic therapy for nasal polyps, and the digital health of sinus disease.

Schematic of an activated olfactory receptor in the cell membrane, with G-protein alpha subunit and surrounding ion channels labelled with Na+, Ca++ and Cl-
An olfactory receptor, activated. The seven-helix bundle binds an odour molecule and triggers the G-protein cascade that opens the surrounding ion channels. Diagram by Mr Gane.

Themes

  • Olfaction. Vibrational theory, molecular vibration-sensing, olfactory dysfunction nomenclature and questionnaire development.
  • COVID-19 anosmia and parosmia. Sudden-onset anosmia as a novel syndrome, BRS consensus guidelines, corticosteroid treatment, post-COVID parosmia and food perception, molecular mechanisms.
  • CRSwNP and biologics. Principal investigator on multiple treatment studies. SYNAPSE mepolizumab, dupilumab efficacy, IL-4/IL-13 pathway, EUFOREA pocket guide, the MACRO trial of clarithromycin versus surgery.
  • Nasal inflammatory disease and allergy. Aspirin sensitivity, allergic rhinitis mimics, eosinophil reference values, breathing pattern disorders.
  • Skull base and oncology. Olfactory neuroblastoma outcomes, sinonasal melanoma with immunotherapy, oncogenic osteomalacia.
